Before Happü, perhaps

This recording was released as Jazz Fiction, but I've always felt it was closer to what later became Happü.

I think it may have been the first time Petter, Henry and I recorded something together without Hannes.

It wasn't an improvisation created entirely out of nothing. We talked through what we wanted to do and tried recording it several times during the same evening.

The result was a rather massive piece of avant-garde metal.

Henry's guitar was heavily distorted, and Petter was using effects on his saxophone. It was a much thicker and rougher sound than what we had usually played together.

I was playing a drum lick I'd borrowed from Yussef's Groove by Tenderlonious.

It was a difficult lick to play, and I constantly felt as though I was about to lose control of it. There are no fills, and I think I only played one or two cymbal hits during the entire recording.

It actually worked rather well. Often, the less you play, the better it gets.

Then, at the end of the recording, a cup fell off a table and broke.

You can hear me laughing.

The video ends with footage from another incident involving Petter. Several people are examining his injured foot. I think we were at some kind of New Year's dinner at his house.

When I made Interdimensional Swing II / Broken Leg, it seemed appropriate to revisit Petter's rather dramatic history of foot injuries.

I'm very glad I kept the sound of the cup breaking in the original recording.

It really sounds as though we were having fun when we played.
